How do veneers work?

If you are looking to try and improve your smile, then getting veneers could be the right option for you. To put it simply, veneers are a shell that is bonded to the front of your tooth, they look extremely similar to natural teeth and feel like it too! You can either have it done for a single tooth or your whole mouth, it is completely up to you.

How does it work?

As with any dental treatment, you will firstly have a consultation appointment with your Sydney CBD dentist to make sure that veneers are the right choice for you and your needs. During this consultation appointment, videos, x-rays and photos will be taken of your teeth so that a plan can be created for your treatment if you decide to go forward.

To further make sure that your results are perfect for you, you will be shown a digital image of what the veneers will look like. This really helps in ensuring that the treatment is tailored to you and that you are happy with how your mouth will look.

Photos and videos will be taken from every angle, including your whole face, as this allows for a more accurate and clean result. By taking photos from different angles and further away from your mouth, it means that the end result will fit in better with the shape of your mouth and head. This helps with making sure that your veneers don’t look too big, fake or out of place when they are actually in.

Once you are happy with how your veneers will look and have confirmed everything with your dentist, you can begin the treatment! To begin, your teeth will be polished, cleaned and etched. Etching roughens the surface of the teeth which allows for a better bonding process. Your dentist will place the veneers on your teeth temporarily with a special adhesive to make sure that the fit and colour is right before permanently bonding them. Once the veneers are properly positioned, they are permanently bonded to the teeth with dental cement. After this, a very bright light will be shined on your teeth to activate chemicals in the cement, this helps it to harden very quickly. A follow-up visit is recommended a couple of weeks after to make sure that your gums are adapting well to your artificial teeth and to check the placement of them.

The advantages

There are many advantages that come with having porcelain veneers, the first one is how natural they look. This is due to the customizability of the colour and fit of the veneers themselves, they blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Another great benefit of getting veneers is that your gums can tolerate porcelain well, better than some other materials. This really helps with reducing any possible irritation or other issues. It is important to not damage your natural teeth whilst having cosmetic dentistry done, and this treatment encourages that.

Porcelain veneers are also great for resisting stains, you will still need to take care of them, but they can be more stain resistant than your natural teeth!

Veneers are very easy to take care of which is a great advantage, all you need to do is brush and floss like you would with your normal teeth! They usually last around 10 years but can last longer with the correct maintenance. It all comes down to making sure you take the right care of them.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
